Zero Waste Cushion Wine
Cushion Covers:
This cushion cover has been made using leftover “waste” cloth from bespoke Savile row suits, thoughtfully supplied by Kent & Haste.
After cutting out the garment pieces for bespoke suits and separates, sometimes there is a perfect cushion-sized piece that is rarely saved and usually sent to landfill.
Now, these luxury fabrics have been saved from a sad fate and have been repurposed into new designs so they, too, can be made into quality pieces that can be enjoyed for years to come at home - much like their bespoke suit and sari counterparts.
The silk embellishments on some of these cushion covers are made from 100% recycled sari silk ribbon - made using pure silk fabrics leftover from an Indian sari manufacturer.
They are handmade by craftspeople and a women’s co-operative in rural parts of the country, and are hand-dyed.
The strips of cloth are carefully ironed, topstitched, and then hand-gathered, before machine stitching them on to make up the decorative motifs using symbols taken from my graduate collection.
Other cover embellishments are made from more Savile Row suiting materials, cut into strips and applied in the same fashion as the sari silk ribbons.
Cushion Fillers:
This cushion filler has been made by reusing and recycling "waste" from previous garments and projects; the leftover pieces that are trimmed and cut away throughout each state of the bespoke garment-making/ alteration process. Each scrap has been carefully collected and saved, before being hand cut into smaller pieces to use as stuffing. While some pieces are sourced from my independent work, the majority has been rescued from the workshop corners of numerous independent tailors in working for various Savile Row firms.
The inside materials range from: wool, linen, silk, viscose, organic cotton, and a minute amount of polyester.
Leftover cotton threads have also been saved from stitching and added to the mix to help create this filler cushion.
The outside has been made using cotton calico (unbleached cotton). Due to the nature of these pieces and the materials they contain inside, it is advised that they are dry-cleaned only.
Both the inner and outer fabrics used for these cushions are sourced from predominantly British and Italian mills, and all have been supplied by Savile Row tailors.
